Different Types of Video Baluns | Advantages & Disadvantages | IPCS Automation

CCTV video baluns, otherwise called UTP balun allows coax cable to be replaced by cat 5 cables and twisted pair wire in CCTV. Video baluns allow the of use more cost-effective structured cabling techniques in CCTV cameras. By using video baluns, UTP wires such as cat-5 can be used in long-distance transmissions as they are easier than coax cable and comes for less money. Active video balun can be used for up to 6000 feet distance transmission between the camera and DVR.

This Video Balun allows the transmission of Video, and Power via one Cat5 unshielded twisted pair cable, in a point to point connection used for cabling. Used in pairs, it replaces the costly and bulky coaxial cable and power cable. The more uses of video balun can be availed from the CCTV training classes in Kochi.

A balun is used to joins a balanced line to an unbalanced line. A balanced line is one that has two conductors, with equal currents in opposite directions, such as a twisted pair cable and an unbalanced line is one that has just one ground and a conductor, such as a coaxial cable. A balun is used to convert an unbalanced signal to a balanced one or vice versa. Balunsisolate a transmission line and provide a balanced output.

In CCTV coaxial cable is used to connect and carry the video between the CCTV camera and the DVR, But if the distance is more than 1000ft the video will be lose in this situation we can use video balun which is connect using CAT5 or6 cable, will allow long range of run with low cost, the video can carry up to 6000feet. The main benefits of CCTV can be accessed from the advanced courses in CCTV. One CAT5 cable can support 4 CCTV camera, one CAT5 cable contain 8 wires. If only a few cameras are used, CAT 5 can carry power also, so that the camera can be powered from any Place.

Monitor-side baluns that support power is 18V-24V DC from the wall.  The power pass towards the camera, naturally, this 18V current will degrade. On the camera-side balun, a power regulator will convert the current to 12V DC and feed it to the camera. Some baluns like pass-through baluns can pass AC power to the camera.

You can buy baluns with integrated remote power, or add it with a pair of power-only baluns. Use minimum 1 pair of wires in the cable run to transmit power.

Active and Passive Video Baluns

The Passive Video baluns can transmit signals up to 1000ft distance using CAT5 Cable, no signal intensity changes or amplification. Send the strengthened signal to the receiver side within 1000 feet.

Active Video baluns can transmit signals up to 6000 to 10000feet using CAT5 Cable, no signals intensity change or amplification. Send a strengthened signal to the receiver side within 10000 feet.
