What is the Internet of Things?
IoT is the giant network of systems which are connected to the internet. They can exchange data over a network without manual assistance or intervention, making opportunities for more direct integration of the physical world into computer-based systems.All the decisions are taken by the embedded technology associated with it by interacting with internal states or external environment. The IoT systems are having equipment embedded with electronics, sensors, software, actuators etc.

The IoT systems can take decisions according to the internal or external events. Since the devices are connected to the internet and are smart it improves the efficiency of the systems with the help of networks, data collection and AI

Most of the IoT devices can be made in small size, which in turn makes it inexpensive and portable
Anything which can be automated can be automated. The IoT devices can communicate with each other with the help of internet.Networks can occur on a much cheaper and smaller scale while still being practical. IoT creates these tiny networks between its system devices.

Any microcontroller or programmable devices like Arduino or Raspberry pi can be used to make an IoT device. The only requirement is that there should be a hardware which can be connected to the internet. The sensors associated with the systems gives necessary information to the controlling device and the controlling device process the sensor values and shares the data over the internet. All the IoT devices are connected to any of the IoT platforms like Blynk, Node Red, Things Speak, Cayenne,IBM Watson etc. It integrates data from different devices and applies analytics to most important information. These platforms know which are valuable and which can be ignored. Then it will perform some tasks associated with it. That is the data from the hardware are shared with the cloud and then to the other end device.in general machine to machine communication is done over the internet.
